This is Aroma Mama’s blog stats and income report for August 2017, my fifth month of blogging. This report shows my blog stats, blog income, and expenses, how I made my income, what I learned, and my goals for September.
This is my blog income report introduction. If you have read why I write my blog income reports and how I started monetizing my blog before, go ahead and start reading the blog stats and what I learned this month! 😉
I went into blogging being acutely aware that it could take a very long time before I made a penny back for my time and expenses. I blog because I love to help people and I have a further reach by having a blog. Monetizing my blog is a goal of mine so I can continue to help people reach their health and wellness goals and help bloggers to succeed with their blogs while I still cover my operating expenses and eventually contribute to my family.
My Reasons for Writing My Blog Income Reports
My original reason for posting my blog income reports was because I was encouraged to start a blog by reading blog income reports. I made a decision to start my blog income reports from the very beginning. I wanted to pay it forward and help others who are thinking of starting a blog. Blog income reports provide me so much value and inspiration!
Now, I read even more blog income reports than I used to because I still find them so helpful and inspirational. Actually, I find them so helpful that I have a Pinterest board called Blog Income Reports and a group board called We Love Blog Income Reports for income reports and blogging posts. (Send me your Pinterest username using this link if you want to become a contributor to my group board!)
Blog income reports help bloggers to see other blogs income and expenses, strategies and goals, and resources and tools bloggers like to use and find helpful. On a practical note, because my blog is an open book, my blog income reports save me a lot of time answering emails about what tools and resources I use for my blog. Also, the affiliate links help to fund the tools I buy for my website so that I can continue to help people improve their quality of life by writing about natural health and wellness.
My final reason to post my blog income report is to keep myself accountable. I was a nurse for a long time and still like to chart meticulously. I want my income reports to be an accurate picture of “health” for my blog, good or bad. This will allow me to see more clearly where my blog needs to improve.
My hope is that my blog income report is not a cause for comparison, but rather, to get at least one takeaway that can benefit every blogger reading this. I am very sincere, honest, and humbled to share all of my personal blog information, and it’s not always easy. Blogs take time to grow so my numbers aren’t anything special. I do my best to write my income report in a way that teaches bloggers everything I’ve learned along my blogging journey so far.
My blog income reports have a lot of value especially for new bloggers to see how I work and advance my blog, so for now, I will continue to write and publish mine on the first of every month. I love to share what I learn because I have a passion for helping people succeed in all areas of their life!
How I Got Started with Monetizing My Blog
I took a course for new bloggers called Building a Framework. (This course is still in my top two of favorite courses! The price is low and it’s packed with value that helped me make my blog what it is!) During the course, I learned the basics of how to make income from blogging. I decided to start monetizing my blog through affiliate marketing. My first affiliate was Amazon because they are a good fit for any niche. Then, I began to search for affiliate programs for companies that I know and love.
Soon after launching my blog I took a popular course called Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing because other bloggers so highly recommended it and I knew there was still so much I needed to learn to be able to monetize my blog successfully. This course was a game changer for me and this is the other course that is in my top two of favorite courses! I applied the lessons as I went through the course and started to see my affiliate sales come in! I highly recommend Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing to everyone that wants to monetize their blog! The cost will pay for itself and so much more.
Affiliate marketing allows new bloggers to make an income from blogging right away which helps to pay for their blog start-up expenses. It takes time to build up page views to make a decent income from ads. A blogger needs to get to know their readers to be able to fill a need before creating a product for them. Networking with brands to get sponsored posts can take time as well.
My Blog Stats and Income Report for my Fifth Month of Blogging
There was a direct correlation between summer break and a nosedive in my pageviews. I started hearing about kids going back to school last week, and interestingly, my pageviews started to go back up to where they were in June before school got out.
I’m so excited to have reached 100 subscribers this month! That is a milestone for a new blogger! I’m not keeping track of unconfirmed subscribers anymore since I’m moving on.
I continued to have a lot of Pinterest growth this month. I will share why in the what I learned section later on in this post. My Instagram numbers went down for the first time, but I haven’t put the effort in driving traffic. I bought a course called Instamazing Growth: Passion and Profits that I really need to take! Hopefully, I have a better Instagram report next month.
Total Blog Income Earned in August 2017: $92.37
Nearly all of my income came from affiliate sales.
Google AdSense: $7.37
Total Blog Expenses in August 2017: $1.00
I spent $1.00 on a Facebook boost of my latest freebie and got one person to click for that price. I did this for the practice, but I’m not willing to spend more since I don’t have a product yet to lead the freebie into a sales funnel.
This is the least amount I’ve spent in a given month since I started Aroma Mama. I pay for my blog tools with yearly subscriptions to save cash. Plus, I’ve already bought all the blogging courses I need for now.
Review of July’s Goals
My goals for August are focused on growing my email list. The first goal is to be an active participant in the August 2017 List Building Challenge hosted by Eden Fried. My second goal is to start on Unit 5 in Elite Blog Academy which is all about growing my email list. It looks like a challenging unit so I don’t expect to get through the whole unit in a month. My third goal is to take a course called ConvertKit Masterclass that was included in BC Stack 2017. I am glad all goals are focused on growing my email list so I can get really focused. In August, I am aiming to get to 200 subscribers.
I took the Eden Fried Email List Building Challenge and I really stretched myself last month to get to 200 subscribers. I didn’t reach that goal, but I learned a lot and still grateful that the challenge stretched me. It didn’t help that I was on vacation for 8 days because I would have written a blogging freebie during that time that I think would have done well. I did reach the other goals that were within my hands to accomplish. In addition to my August goals, I did several things this month that are helping me to be an established blogger. I listed what I did below.
What I Learned
My Pinterest account is really growing the most from what I’ve been working on. There are a few things that have contributed to this. I took Pinterest Unpuzzled and Pinning Perfect that has really helped me and I recommend both of them.
The course, Pinterest Unpuzzled, taught me how to use Boardbooster, but most of all, I learned some strategies that are really helping my pins bring in more traffic to my website for quick results. Pinterest Unpuzzled is a great value and at such a low price. In addition, it’s deeply discounted for Labor Day and it’s only $23.50 until September 5th. Use discount code, LABORDAY50.
Pinning Perfect is the other Pinterest course that is a favorite of mine. This course taught me how to use Tailwind, how to improve my images, and how to save a lot of time on Pinterest with a long-term strategy.
Women Bloggers That Promote is a Facebook group I started with my accountability partner in July to help women bloggers promote their blogs and affiliates. The group continues to grow, is full of supportive women, and we finished up the month with 99 members! This group has given me the opportunity to get to know blogger’s successes and struggles in a more meaningful way. This allows me to celebrate with them and support them which I really enjoy. I feel that starting this group has been one of my biggest blogging successes! While writing this post, I just received the news that we reached 100 members, woohoo!
I signed up to get a free audio book called Overlap by Sean McCabe and had the opportunity to listen to it already. It was so good that I plan to hear it again and again. The book launches September 14th and the audio version is free until September 12th when you use the link, then after, the Kindle price is $29. (So please click this link and get it while it’s free!)
I thought the book was going to be just about how to overlap from a regular day job. I was so mistaken, it was so much more! This is an excellent book for bloggers and online marketers. You won’t regret it and it’s free right now until September 12th! I was taking extra exercise breaks during my recent vacation just to get more time away to keep listening to the book!
I read another book while on vacation called Wantrepreneur to Entrepreneur by Brian Lofrumento. I got this book from BC Stack 2017 and just paid for shipping. Also, it’s free with Kindle Unlimited. The author really motivated me to work harder. This is another book that I plan to read again and again for new insights.
Elite Blog Academy
My goal for August was to start Unit 5 in Elite Blog Academy. I got on such a roll that I blew right through it and ended up doing Unit 6, 7, and all the bonus courses too!
Media Kit Smash was a quick and enjoyable course. Over 3 days (while on vacation) I was able to build a very professional looking media kit with my lack of designing skills! A professional looking media kit can be the difference with a brand choosing to work with you or not. This course is a part of BC Stack 2017. So definitely, register for it if you bought that bundle. Otherwise, the course is still worth paying for. Take a look at the course description for more information.
A Blogging Newsletter
During my recent vacation, I took time to relax and think about the future of Aroma Mama. I realized that I really like writing to bloggers so I felt that they deserved their own newsletter. Starting today, I will be sending a monthly newsletter to bloggers that subscribe to it. I have been publishing these income reports on the first of the month even if I don’t have all my affiliate sales accounted for. Some sales notifications come in days later so I just add them to the post as I get the news. I will send out the blogging newsletter after publishing my income report. If you’d like to join my blogging newsletter, you can sign up below.
Goals for September
- I took on a role to lead two accountability groups this September and I want to give these bloggers the support and attention they deserve.
- Attend EBA Activate (it’s a blog conference in Portland, OR) and network with other bloggers.
- Write a guest post for my favorite blogger’s website, Eden Fried, and interview her for my blog. I have learned so much from her!
