This is an honest review of Aromahead Institute which is the virtual school for essential oil studies that I attend. First, I want to give you the back story into how and why I found Aromahead Institute.
In my first blog post, My Husband’s Illness That Changed My Career, I share my story into what lead me to natural health and wellness. About ten years ago, I began my search for natural alternatives to products I used. Everything from toiletries, household cleaners and even sought out natural alternatives to over-the-counter drugs. So you can imagine how excited I was when someone introduced me to doTERRA essential oils a few years ago.
From the very beginning, I wanted to learn how to use essential oils for the maximum therapeutic benefit. Also, I knew essential oils are potent and concentrated, so a little bit goes a long way. I wanted to learn how to use essential oils safely for my whole family. My friend, Katie, recommended that I get a formal education from a third party, so I correctly teach and share essential oils with others since I was starting a doTERRA essential oil business.
Aromahead Institute
I went online to search for the best essential oil education I could find and sought out one that was online so I could learn from home. I chose Aromahead Institute for all the experience that the founder, Andrea Butje, had with essential oils. Aromahead Institute was founded by Andrea Butje in 1999 and went on to become a virtual school in 2013. The school’s mission as stated on their website, www.aromahead.com, is:
The Aromahead Institute seeks to make the study and therapeutic use of essential oils widely accessible to casual learners and healing arts professionals around the globe through our state-of-the art online study program. By following an evidence based curriculum approach to incorporating intensive science and practical hands-on instruction, The Institute aims to elevate the science and study of aromatherapy to deliver its ability to heal and enhance wellbeing to individuals and professionals alike.
Aromahead Institute offers many courses for people wanting to learn how to use essential oils. The course list has even grown since I first enrolled in my Certification Program. In this review, I will highlight a few of the courses I have taken and recommend.
Aromatherapy for Natural Living by Aromahead Institute
The Aromatherapy for Natural Living course teaches how to use essential oils and make natural products for babies, children, adults, and for the home. I recommend this class to someone that wants to use essential oils for the family and home for a natural lifestyle. I enjoyed this class and got a lot of great recipes including my favorite cleaning recipe, Soft Abrasive Cleaner.
Here are a couple of FREE webinars hosted by Aromahead Institute. The link will give you the opportunity to register.
Body Butters and Lip Balms by Aromahead Institute
My next favorite course is Body Butters and Lip Balms. I recommend this class to someone that wants to be confident with working with all kinds of butters and carrier oils and may one day want to sell their body butters and lip balm products. I loved this course and had so much fun making the recipes.
Aromatherapy Certification Program by Aromahead Institute
This program is perfect for the person that has an essential oil business or wants to be an aromatherapist. It’s important to give accurate information when you are talking about something that can potentially affect other people. I am still working through this program and have nearly completed it several times. Life keeps getting in the way from having a baby to care for, a major move, and starting a blog! It is the most extensive and time-intensive program from Aromahead Institute.
During this course, I’m reading a lot of essential oil data sheets and learning how to read GC/MS reports for an essential oil. The program includes an Anatomy and Physiology course and exam, writing a research paper and a final exam. Along with this are case studies designed to be accomplished by working with real people. I assure you that even though this may sound overwhelming, Andrea and her team are very supportive and want to help their students succeed.
There are a lot of people that have essential oil businesses and may wonder if this course has helped my business. I think taking the Certification Program has helped my doTERRA business by giving me the confidence and knowledge to help people choose which essential oils to purchase to reach their goals. I have found that people are more willing to listen to me when I share information about essential oils. In this regard, it has helped my doTERRA business as people want to buy products from someone they trust isn’t in the business just to make money and know what they’re talking about.
People see that I have worked hard to be educated in essential oils and am looking out for their best interest. Click here to register for the free webinar on how to become a certified aromatherapist.
Introduction to Essential Oils by Aromahead Institute
If you want to begin using essential oils or are new to using them, I recommend the free course from Aromahead Institute called Introduction to Essential Oils. It is an excellent overview for the beginning essential oil user, and it is where I started years ago. To enroll in this free course, click here.
The downside to Aromahead Institute
Essential oils have become so popular in the last several years. My doTERRA essential oil business began in the Fall of 2014 and I have witnessed the rise in popularity. Some of the questions I get a lot are asking me about essential oils for internal use and how to use essential oils on their pets. Aromahead Insitute does not cover either of those topics.
Why I love Aromahead Institute
I have come to appreciate the founder, Andrea Butje. She is such a kind person that has decades of experience with essential oils that she gives to her students. She authentically cares about people and their safety with using essential oils and teaches her students to do the same. Every time I finish a course, she sends me an email congratulating me, and when I write her, she promptly emails me back. I like that she is very organized and the courses are well thought out and easy to navigate. You can get an example of this by enrolling in the free course.
I like that I can be a busy mom and go through the courses at my own pace. I have lifetime access to the courses, the forum, and all the updates. My favorite perk is the online forum that is full of aromatherapists. They help me with additional questions I have about essential oils and with case studies when I need it.
I hope you enjoyed reading my honest review of Aromahead Institute and some of my favorite courses. I have learned so much from Andrea Butje and am so grateful for her programs.

Yes I’m curious about your experience with doTerra …im staring an EO business and I’m not sure what the most economical way is to buy and resell EO to clients. It’s be nice to hear your thoughts if you have time
Hi, Debbie! I can discuss this with you further. The best way to go about this is to write me through the contact form that is along the header. Please share more about your essential oil business and your goals. Talk to you later!
Do you know where I can find a reputable resource for use of EOs for pets?
Hi, Diana! I have yet to come across a reputable resource for use of essential oils with pets. I can ask some of my aromatherapist friends to see if they would know. I will respond here if I can find a resource for you! Thanks for visiting!
Dr. Roark on face book is very knowledgeable!!
Hi, Diana! One of my aromatherapy instructors recommended an Animal Aromatherapy Practitioner Certification Course. Here’s the link to read more about it, http://ashitherapy.webs.com/animalaromatherapy.htm. I was told they have incredible expertise!
Thanks! As a matter of fact, I took the course! It’s a great course, but it’s primarily for dogs and horses. I was kind of wondering what is safe for cats.
Diana.
cats livers cannot metabolize essential oils well at all. They can be very dangerous for them , even diffused.
Melissa Shelton, DVM or the Oily Vet. She has written a well-researched reference book on the use of essential oils on many animal species and she has a business selling essential oils for use on animals. I’ve used several of her oil blends successfully to heal both of my cats of respiratory illnesses.
Go to the NAHA website. They have a list of aromatherapy schools that they recommend. Go down the list, there is one in there that is strictly animals. I want to do that one when I finish Aromahead. I do canine and equine massage and reiki, I want to incorporate oils
Thank you for sharing your experience with them! Been looking for a review of Aromahead and this pretty much covered all of my concerns.
You’re welcome, and thanks for visiting!
Thank you for your review! Can you recommend programs that also include internal use of oils?
Just started my Aromahead CAP course this week. I’m so excited to learn more about the chemistry so I can confidently recommend oils to family and friends. I love doTerra and I don’t want to just work the business, I truly want to help people live the best life possible. Glad you’re enjoying the course.
Hi, Danielle! Congratulations on starting your course with Aromahead! It sounds like we are getting an education in essential oils for the same reasons! Maybe I’ll see you in the forum!
Hello! I am also a doTERRA rep looking at studying with Andrea! I am so happy to read your posts!
I am also wanting to know about EOs and cats. (and dogs).
That’s great, Luz! Thank you for sharing!
Hi,
It’s been a little over a year now when I came across essential oils and I’m really addicted to it. I have been experimenting with various recipes that I use daily. I have stopped taking all my allergy medication and even my pain medication for my TMJ. I am also a nurse with over 20 years of experience and like other people I never thought there were no other means of treating illnesses other than Western Medicine. Anyways, I am looking into becoming a Certified Aromatherapist and wondering if you’ve heard of or worked with Institute of Integrative Aromatherapy. Founded by a nurse and the course offers continuing education for healthcare workers.
That’s great! I hadn’t heard of the Institute of Integrative Aromatherapy. I’d love to hear how you like it if you go forward.
Thank you for this excellent review! It was very informative and helpful. I too use doTerra oils and have for a few years. I am interested to know if you have any experience using the Aromahead essential oils. DoTerra is always my preferred company but there are other oils I am keen to try. I wonder if you can speak to the oils themselves. Thank you!
Hi, Tracey! I have purchased essential oils from Aromatics International. My favorite brand of essential oils is doTERRA, but Aromatics International carry some essentials oils that doTERRA does not have at the moment and they are good quality as well.
